Chido Obi's omission from Manchester United's recent pre-season squads suggests he must consider his future at the club, with a loan or permanent departure likely before the transfer deadline.
Obi's Limited Pre-Season Role
The 18-year-old forward was named in the first two pre-season squads, against Wrexham and Rosenborg. After being an unused substitute against the Championship side, he played 29 minutes in Trondheim as United won 5-0.
However, Obi was left out of the travelling squad for the match against Atletico Madrid, instead playing for the U21s against Altrincham. He was also missing from the squad for the friendly against Paris Saint-Germain.
Carrick's Tactical Decisions
His exclusion comes despite United missing first-choice striker Benjamin Sesko. In his absence, Joshua Zirkzee has led the line, while Bryan Mbeumo has also been trialled at centre-forward.
These decisions indicate Carrick does not see Obi in his attacking plans for the season. If he did, he would have at least featured him against Atletico and PSG.
Potential Moves
Earlier in the window, Bundesliga club FC Koln were interested in signing Obi on loan, though that interest has waned. A temporary exit is still possible, as is a permanent departure.
United have often used the Championship as a testing ground for academy players, but a move there could be risky for Obi. As a striker, he would face pressure to reach double figures, which might not be ideal at this stage of his development.
Leaving for a mid-to-lower Bundesliga, La Liga, or Serie A club would be safer, allowing him to develop away from scrutiny. A productive loan spell could fast-track his development and give Carrick something to consider in 2027.
