A mother has spoken of her anger after her child's school sent her an official warning letter asking her to stop wearing pyjamas when collecting her child. The school said the outfit had started to "cause embarrassment" for her child, prompting the mum to vent on social media.
School's Request for Appropriate Clothing
The letter, reported by the Liverpool Echo, read: "Dear Parent/Guardian, we are reaching out to address a concern that has been brought to our attention regarding afternoon dismissal. We have noticed that you have been arriving for school pickup while wearing pyjamas or sleep attire on several occasions. While we understand that dismissal can be a busy and sometimes rushed time, we kindly ask that you dress appropriately when coming onto school property."
The letter continued: "Several students have made comments, and it has begun to cause embarrassment for your child. We want to ensure that all of our students feel confident and comfortable during dismissal. We appreciate your cooperation and support in helping us maintain a positive and respectful school environment. Sincerely, Assistant Principal."
Mother's Response on Social Media
The mother said the letter left her livid, describing the pyjamas as the "only thing holding her together." She wrote online: "SINCE WHEN DID THE SCHOOL START ENFORCING A DRESS CODE ON THE PARENTS? Imagine pulling up to pick your child up from school, minding your business, just to receive a whole letter from the assistant principal telling you to stop wearing pyjamas in the pickup line. I'm here to get my child, not interview for a position."
She added: "Talking about other students have been making comments and my child is embarrassed! Well baby, you better hurry up and get in this car before somebody sees your mum in these fuzzy slippers. Now I understand parents should be dressed appropriately when entering the school, but if I'm sitting in MY OWN VEHICLE waiting for MY CHILD, why are you monitoring my damn wardrobe? Between getting kids ready, working, cleaning, cooking, and handling a million responsibilities, sometimes these pyjamas are the only thing holding me together."
The incident has sparked debate over whether parents should face a dress code on the school run.
