A mother has spoken of her outrage after receiving a letter from her child's school asking her to stop packing hot meals in a flask for lunch. The school said the hot lunches were causing jealousy and distraction among other pupils, but the request has divided opinion among parents online.
School's Request Over Hot Lunches
The letter, which was shared on Facebook with identifying details removed, read: "Dear Parent/Guardian, I am reaching out regarding your child's lunch. We have noticed that your child often brings hot meals to school, which is wonderful and shows that you care about their nutrition."
It continued: "However, several other students have expressed feelings of jealousy or disappointment because their lunches are different. This has started to cause some distractions during lunch time, as students are asking to share, comparing meals, or becoming upset about what they have versus what your child has."
The school asked the parent to consider packing lunches "more similar to what other students typically bring, such as sandwiches, fruits, or cold lunch options," in an effort to maintain a positive and inclusive environment.
Mixed Reactions From Parents
The mother expressed her outrage on Facebook, and other parents were quick to comment. One said: "It ain’t her problem other kids peoples don’t do this, my mum packs food for my siblings every single day after cooking for the whole family and cleaning and still working, there’s always excuses if a mum really loves their child she will do it."
Another commented: "No absolutely not. Your allowed to pack your kids lunch and if want to pack them a hot lunch you do it. I'm sorry for they other kids but no just no."
A third parent said: "How disappointed are those kids gonna be when they get to an office environment and the kid with the hot lunches at school has meal prepped for a week and has some of the best food going while everyone else is surviving on caffeine, nicotine, and their broken dreams."
One commenter noted: "My daughter makes her own lunches for school at grade 5 /11 y.o. some days she takes noodles or mac'n'cheese in a thermos. Other kids are like ah man wish I'd thought of that.. next week they had a thermos of hot noodles too. ADAPT!"
Call for Schools to Educate Instead
A fourth parent said: "The audacity! What we prepare and what we can afford for our own children shouldn't be a source of jealousy, parents have their own preferences especially when preparing food for their kids."
They added: "The school should educate the parents and encourage them to do the same not single out one kid because they have a hot meal for lunch."
The UK Government website states that schools must focus on improving the nutritional quality of meals by increasing fruit, vegetables and fibre, and reducing foods high in fat, salt and sugar. The school's letter did not cite these guidelines, instead focusing on the social impact of the hot lunches.
