A survey of 21 children aged five to eight has revealed the most desired Christmas gifts for 2024, bypassing marketing lists to hear directly from kids. Among the top requests are Squishmallows, Lego sets, and slime, with many children showing a preference for toys that offer sensory play or creative building.
Popular items include the Lego City Penguin Slushy Van (£17.99), which five-year-old Leo from York said he wants because he likes building and loves slushies. The Original Squishmallows Pikachu 14-inch (£30) was a favourite for six-year-old Nathaniel from Stroud, who cited its size, squishiness and Pokémon theme.
Children also expressed a desire for room decorations, such as LED strip lights (£14.99), which eight-year-old George from Manchester said would make his room 'bright and colourful' and help him emulate his older cousins. Sports gear was another common theme, with a six-year-old from Essex requesting an England football kit (£35.74) and a six-year-old from Cirencester wanting a Mario fleece onesie to stay warm after swimming.
Some gifts reflect growing independence, such as a ride-on Mercedes GT4 AMG (£129.99) requested by six-year-old Fred from Kent, who specifically wanted one with gears. Meanwhile, sensory toys like mochi squishy sets (£9.99) and slime remain popular, with eight-year-old Sophia from Essex explaining she loves squishies because 'they are so sweet'.
The findings highlight that children's wishes range from affordable items like giant pavement chalk (£4.80) to more expensive gifts like Harry Potter glow-in-the-dark duvet sets (from £22). The survey underscores the importance of asking children directly, as their desires often defy market predictions and focus on personal interests and play value.
