Israeli air strikes hit the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, on Sunday, killing six people and wounding 86 others, according to Houthi health officials. The strikes targeted a military compound housing the presidential palace, two power plants and a fuel storage site, the Israeli military said.
The assault was in retaliation for recent Houthi missile and drone attacks against Israel, including a ballistic missile launched on Friday. An Israeli air force official said the missile carried multiple submunitions intended to detonate on impact, marking the first time such a weapon had been used from Yemen.
The Houthis, an Iran-aligned group that controls large parts of Yemen, have repeatedly fired missiles at Israel and attacked Red Sea shipping since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, citing solidarity with Palestinians. Israel has responded with strikes on Houthi-controlled areas, including the port of Hodeidah.
Senior Houthi official Abdul Qader al-Murtada said the group would continue its actions in support of Palestinians in Gaza. “(Israel) must know that we will not abandon our brothers in Gaza, whatever the sacrifices,” he posted on social media.
