Inside Liverpool's Youth Recruitment Drive Under Andoni Iraola
Liverpool Youth Recruitment Drive Under Iraola

Liverpool are intensifying their youth recruitment efforts as the club embarks on a new cycle under manager Andoni Iraola. The club is close to signing Colombian youth international Samuel Martinez, part of a broader strategy to bolster the Academy ranks.

Academy Investment and Recruitment Strategy

Plans for a £20 million renovation of Liverpool's Academy are being complemented by an aggressive recruitment drive at the youth level. The Kirkby base has produced stars like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, and Conor Bradley over the past decade. While not all graduates make the first team, many have been sold for significant fees, generating over £200 million since 2020.

Key sales include Tyler Morton (£15m to Lyon), Caoimhin Kelleher (£18m to Brentford), and Jarell Quansah (£35m to Bayer Leverkusen). Even Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid raised £10m due to accelerated transfer terms.

Owners Fenway Sports Group view the £20m investment as essential to sustain this model. Technical director Julian Ward has led fact-finding missions across Europe to revamp the Kirkby setup.

New Appointments and Incoming Talents

Matt Newberry was promoted to head of global talent 18 months ago, overseeing recruitment. In January, Liverpool signed Mor Talla Ndiaye from Senegal's Aimite for £1m after his performance at the U17 World Cup. The teenager made three match-day squads under Arne Slot in May.

Contract offers have been made to U21 players Kyle Kelly and Lucas Pitt. Prince Cisse, son of 2005 Champions League winner Djibril Cisse, signed a new deal, while Honduran striker Keyrol Figueroa is expected to follow. Defenders Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Noah Adekoya joined in January from Austria and Burnley, respectively.

Liverpool outmaneuvered Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, and Chelsea to secure Samuel Martinez from Atletico Nacional for £860,000. The 17-year-old creative midfielder will join when he turns 18 in April 2026.

Missed Targets and Retained Stars

Liverpool lost 16-year-old Kennet Eichhorn to Bayer Leverkusen, but are in talks with Manchester City's Xavier Parker. The club successfully fended off interest from Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United for 15-year-old Joshua Abe, who scored eight goals in 10 U18 Premier League North appearances before a knee injury.

Abe, represented by PLG Agency, has trained with the first team and been assigned squad number 40 for the pre-season tour of the United States. Iraola emphasized the importance of integrating young players during pre-season.

Rio Ngumoha's rapid rise after moving from Chelsea serves as a model for retaining talents like Abe. Liverpool are preparing for the future under Iraola, both at senior and Academy levels.
