Man Dead 14 Minutes After 11,000-Volt Shock

A man from Middlesbrough was clinically dead for 14 minutes and spent 29 days in a coma after being electrocuted with enough power to run a factory. Darren Harris, 33, suffered third-degree burns across half his body when he touched live cables carrying 11,000 volts.

The Accident

The incident occurred in 2020 when Harris entered an abandoned building in Wolverhampton to search for scrap metal. Believing the electricity had been disconnected ahead of demolition, he placed his arm on a live switchboard. The massive surge burned his forearms down to the bone. Despite the agonizing injuries, he managed to run out of the building after being thrown back by the blast.

Medical Ordeal

Harris spent 29 days in a coma and underwent extensive surgeries, using skin from his legs to reconstruct his stomach, face, and arms. In total, he has had over 30 operations and continues to face the aftermath. He experienced sepsis three times, full renal failure, and died twice, including a 14-minute period of clinical death.

Recovery and Mental Health

Waking up from the coma was a surreal experience. Harris recalls feeling sadness, anger, and shock when he saw his reflection in a hospital mirror. The trauma has been both physical and mental, leading to PTSD and suicidal thoughts. He has attempted suicide with drugs and alcohol but has always fought to recover.

Future Hopes

Harris is now seeking life-changing facial reconstruction surgery, which he believes will help him move forward. A fundraising campaign has raised £15,000 toward a £100,000 goal. He hopes the surgery will give him confidence and reduce his emotional pain. Despite everything, he is determined to use his second chance to inspire others facing crises.
