Manchester has been officially named the UK's day-rave capital, with more than three-quarters (76%) of students saying they would rather attend a daytime rave than a late night out. The findings come from a survey commissioned by pizza chain Papa Johns, which found a growing appetite for early socialising across British university towns.
Liverpool followed closely behind on 74%, while Edinburgh took third place with 73%. The shift comes amid the rising popularity of "soft clubbing", as undergraduates increasingly turn their backs on heavy late-night blowouts during Freshers' Week.
Students drink less during daytime socialising
Nearly three in five (59%) students say they drink less - or nothing at all - when socialising during the day, while 11% are entirely teetotal. Looking after physical health and wellbeing (35%) and waking up feeling fresh rather than battling a hangover (31%) were cited as major driving forces behind the daytime trend.
Furthermore, 43% of respondents said they simply do not need alcohol to have a good time, with nearly a third (32%) opting for soft drinks or energy drinks instead. Despite cutting back on late-night drinking, music and socialising remain central to the university experience.
Kitchen remains the heart of the party
Connecting over music (58%) and dancing with new mates (39%) are still the go-to ways for freshers to spend their first week of term. When it comes to hosting duties in student halls and shared houses, the kitchen remains the undisputed heart of the party.
Three-quarters (76%) of students agreed that the best moments happen in the kitchen, whether that involves meeting new people (65%), having deep conversations (68%), or simply finding the best atmosphere (68%). However, student hosts face high expectations.
Pop-up rave and new party packs
Nearly two-thirds (64%) of undergraduates say bad music will ruin a house party's atmosphere, 51% blame poor-quality speakers, and 45% say a lack of decent party food kills the mood. Easy comfort food was named the top essential for getting through the week by 72% of students, with pizza taking the crown as the ultimate favourite for 76%.
To mark the findings, Papa Johns teamed up with Red Bull to transform its Fallowfield takeaway in south Manchester - the heart of the city's student belt - into a pop-up daytime rave. Freshers packed into the shop for a live set from DJG2 alongside slices of pizza and cold energy drinks.
A spokesperson for Papa Johns said: "Students are choosing to rave earlier, and the kitchen is officially the place where everyone comes together. So, when Manchester was crowned the UK's day-rave capital, we thought: why not invite its students into our kitchen for the ultimate daytime party? Freshers From The Kitchen served up great music, piping-hot pizza and plenty of energy - no 3am finish required."
Following the Manchester event, the takeaway chain has launched limited-edition "Kit-chen" packs via its app - featuring Bluetooth speakers, merchandise, and pizza vouchers - to help students upgrade their own flat parties across the country.
