Katya Komleva, 35, who lost eight toes and sustained 30% burns after being trapped in boiling water outside a nightclub in Yekaterinburg, Russia, says she would not change the accident because it transformed her life.
The incident occurred in 2011 when she was asked to leave a club and stepped outside in bare legs and high heels into knee-deep boiling water from a burst underground pipe. She spent about ten minutes wading through the 90-degree water before being rescued.
Her skin was 'melting' from her legs, leaving muscles visible, and she was given a 50% chance of survival. She spent two years in hospital, during which she caught sepsis twice and was told she might never walk again.
Life After the Accident
Since her recovery, Katya has quit her job as a digital marketing CEO, traveled the world, tried extreme sports, written a book, and become a confidence coach. She now lives in Mexico City and refuses to wear prosthetics or undergo treatment to reduce her scars because she does not want to hide them.
Reflecting on the ordeal, she said: "If I had the offer to go back in time and avoid the accident, but remain the person I was, I would say no. I'd go through the whole experience again to be where am now."
Details of the Night
Katya, then a student, was out with friends when the DJ announced the club was closing for a 'technical reason'. She was the first to be let out and was warned she would not be let back in. Outside, the fog was actually steam from the burst pipe, and she became disorientated, walking further into the water.
She said: "My psychologist later explained that my brain just shut down, I was working on instinct, it forced me into fight or flight. Instead of figuring out how to turn back I just kept moving forward into the water."
Eventually, she spotted a figure in the distance and walked towards them. She was rescued by a passing friend and taken to hospital in an ambulance.
Acceptance and Confidence
Katya says she has never been insecure about her scars, even though others may find them disgusting. She said: "Very hot guys come and get to know me at the swimming pool, where the most unaesthetic parts of my body are on show. I'm still beautiful, it's all about the confident energy."
She added: "Yeah, I lost my toes, but it's nothing. The best recipe is to stop suffering and start living."
