Parents in Wigan have been urged to keep an eye on their children following reports of youths lighting fires in various locations during the school holidays. Officers say they have received calls about fires at Fosters Playing Fields in Ince-in-Makerfield, Westleigh Park, and near AB World Foods in Leigh.
Police Response
Wigan and Leigh Police stated that names have been provided and officers will be making rounds to speak to the relevant parents and carers. In a statement, they said: "With school holidays underway, it's a good opportunity for parents and carers to check in and make sure they know where their children are spending their time."
Dangers Highlighted
Police emphasised that fires can quickly get out of control, putting people at risk, causing damage to property, and placing unnecessary demands on emergency services. They added: "We would ask all parents to have conversations with their children about the dangers and consequences of setting fires, trespassing, and engaging in anti-social behaviour."
Community Appeal
The police urged the community to report any anti-social behaviour or suspicious activity via GMP on 101, online, or by calling 999 in an emergency. "Let's work together to keep our communities safe throughout the summer holidays," the statement concluded.
