A pregnant woman has sparked a fierce debate online after revealing she wants to name her unborn son Lucifer, a choice she fears may lead others to view her as a "horrible" parent.
In a Reddit post, the expectant mother explained she is due in October and is "stumped" for names, but is absolutely smitten with Lucifer because of its sound, its original meaning of "light-bringer" or "morning star", and its uniqueness. However, she acknowledged the name carries a "horrible stigma" and that people from previous generations may react negatively, potentially impacting her child's future job prospects.
Reddit Users Divided Over Name Choice
The woman, who identifies as a Noahide (a non-Jew who believes in the Torah) while her family and husband's family are Christian, said she expects negative reactions from relatives but is more concerned about how her son will be treated by others, especially adults. She asked fellow users how they would react to meeting a child named Lucifer and whether it is truly a big deal.
The post drew a wide range of responses, with some strongly advising against the name. One user warned, "Please do not name your baby after Satan," while another simply urged, "Just don't do it." A third pointed out that the name is banned in several countries due to its negative connotations, adding, "Don't cause your child that unnecessary baggage, life is hard enough."
Others Encourage Following Her Heart
However, some commenters offered a contrasting view. One wrote, "I think you should follow your heart. It is totally normal and not weird at all to name a boy after the devil... Ignore the haters." Another suggested, "I'm sure people will know that you picked the name because you know its true meaning. No one will think it's weird," and proposed the nickname "Lucky" as an alternative.
The expectant mother also revealed she had been considering other names such as Lucas, Lucien, and Lucius, but doesn't feel as strongly about them. She said she would give her son the option to change his name or go by something like Lucy if it became a problem.
