Nearly 100 minors were detained by police after breaking into an abandoned theatre in San Jose, California, for a party involving alcohol. The incident occurred at the Burbank Theatre, which has been shut since 2000.
Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of trespassing around 9:30pm on Friday. Callers had reported loud vehicles and people entering the derelict building carrying alcohol.
When deputies announced their presence, some of the group tried to flee through alternative exits and a number of people were seen on the roof. The minors were eventually forced out of the building and detained.
Authorities set up a command post and contacted the minors’ parents, asking them to collect their children. The juveniles were seated on the sidewalk, admonished and told not to return to the property.
Deputies searched the theatre for any remaining individuals and for weapons, but no firearms were found. No injuries were reported.
The Burbank Theatre first opened in 1951 and later operated as an adult cinema before closing. The site has recently been considered for housing development.
