Mother sparks debate over baby in business class after being screamed at

A mother has sparked a heated online debate after she was confronted by a fellow passenger for flying business class with her crying baby. Charlotte Heinrich, a jewellery designer from Australia, was travelling to Singapore with her one-year-old son Freddie when she says another woman shouted at the child to 'shut up.'

Incident on the plane

Charlotte, who paid for her ticket and asserted she had 'the same rights as the other passenger,' shared her story on social media. In a video titled 'Should mothers with babies be allowed to fly business class?', she described how Freddie was unsettled and crying, and the woman 'screamed across the cabin at the top of her lungs, “Shut up!”'

Charlotte confronted the woman, who said her baby's crying was unacceptable in business class. When Charlotte suggested the woman might not have children, the passenger claimed she had five of her own. Charlotte said she felt 'verbally abused' and that the woman insisted mothers with babies should always fly economy.

Charlotte's response

Charlotte, who has 43,000 followers, raised several objections. First, she felt she was made to feel undeserving of business class despite being a paying customer. Second, she questioned how a mother of five could lack empathy. Third, she condemned the woman's reaction as unacceptable, noting that parents of crying babies are already anxious and doing their best.

In her caption, Charlotte wrote: 'Freddie is one, so he travels on my lap. We quite literally come as a package deal. I completely understand that a crying baby can be frustrating. I’ve been that passenger too. But children are part of life, and parents are usually far more stressed and anxious about disturbing the cabin than anyone else.' She asked followers whether mothers with babies should be restricted to economy.

Public reaction

The comment section flooded with responses, largely supporting Charlotte. One person shared a similar experience of being abused for a crying baby in business class, saying they were 'still traumatized.' Another wrote: 'Buying a business class ticket doesn’t entitle you to a child-free space. Fly private if you don’t want to be around other humans.'

Some sided with the other passenger, arguing that business class is a luxury experience. One commenter said, 'It’s business class not family class. You don’t take a baby to a board meeting.' Others suggested solutions like noise-cancelling headphones or child-free flights.
