Low Fell primary school gets £693k roof repair deal approved by council
Low Fell primary school roof repair deal approved by council

Gateshead Council has approved a £692,929 contract to repair the roof at Glynwood Community Primary School in Low Fell. The decision was made unanimously by the council’s cabinet on 14 July 2026.

Scope of work and timeline

The roof works will address defective coverings, leaks, and associated maintenance issues. Due to the scale of the project, the work will be carried out over three consecutive summer breaks, with the first phase scheduled for summer 2028. The contract includes inflation provisions of £10,000 for the summers of 2027 and 2028.

Contractor selection

Contractor Hodgson Sayers was selected as the top-ranked tenderer based on both price and quality. The contract was signed off by council bosses, with the report stating that the alternative—not awarding the contract—would leave site risks unaddressed and miss the window to begin works this summer break.

Impact on education and environment

Council documents emphasise that good education is a core building block of health. The repairs will ensure a safe, dry, and thermally stable school environment, reducing environmental, structural, and safety risks. The works are also expected to improve weatherproofing, reduce energy use and water ingress, enhance climate resilience, and lower maintenance requirements.
