Love Island fans have criticised what they're calling a 'major issue' as details of unscreened footage have emerged. It's now been over a week since the latest live finale of ITV's dating reality programme aired directly from the Spanish villa. The aftermath of Lorenzo and Julia's triumph continues to reverberate with viewers remaining just as captivated by recent developments beyond the cameras.
Behind-the-scenes revelations
This includes fresh updates from other finalists including runners-up Jasmine and Kavan plus Simba and Angelista who came third following the public vote. The Islanders who reached the final have gradually been sharing behind-the-scenes revelations and responding to questions plus even addressing speculation being discussed by fans. Some of these disclosures have exposed unaired moments that reveal details viewers at home weren't shown.
In a recent chat with Capital, Simba revealed the genuine meaning behind one of his expressions that became amongst the most memorable of the series. During his stint on the programme, Simba mentioned that his mum 'smiled bares', reports OK! This left some rather puzzled. Nevertheless, there's a touching and deeply personal explanation for it.
Heartfelt explanation
Speaking to Capital, he explained: "So, I care for my mum. She's got Motor Neurone Disease which is obviously a neurological illness and so she can't speak. So, when I said 'smiled bares' that is her form of communication." Simba went on, explaining that discussions about his mum's condition weren't broadcast: "So, when I said to her 'Angie is a nurse,' my mum has this eye gaze and it is the way she communicates with her eyes. So, she's written what does she do for work?"
"And I said, 'Oh, she's a nurse' and then boom she just started smiling bares. So that is why I said she smiles bares. But obviously I don't think it was really shown in the show in terms of looking after my mum and her condition." Angelista added: "Yeah, because we had so many conversations about how he cares for his mum."
Fan reaction
Viewers were swift to respond to the revelation, with many condemning the choice to cut Simba's discussions about his mum and his caring responsibilities. One person declared: "This is a major issue with the show in recent years. It flattens it's contestants entirely. Most of the humanising content goes into Unseen Bits, where it remains unseen."
Multiple others suggested this interview revealed a dimension audiences hadn't witnessed during the series. As one person posted: "I like him a lot more from this clip alone than I did the whole season." Someone else commented: "I kept wondering why Angie wouldn't accept that Simba is just unserious, but this completely changes my perspective. They should've shown at least ONE of these conversations! Makes SO much more sense now."
Debate over editing choices
However, some argued that they could grasp why such remarks would be cut out, perhaps for confidentiality reasons on behalf of a contestant's relatives, or giving them greater control in the outside world to have that sort of information made public. One fan contended: "It's a thing across all versions of love island where they don't air personal conversations like that especially someone's parents medical conditions. It makes sense he shares it now because he's actively choosing to but it makes sense that the show didn't air it."
