As summer peaks, flies and maggots become a common nuisance. Soaring temperatures speed up food waste decomposition, attracting flies that lay eggs, which quickly turn into maggots. Wheelie bins filled with decomposing rubbish become perfect breeding grounds.
The bread hack
TikTok user @no56northamptonshire suggests placing bread slices soaked in vinegar at the bottom of wheelie bins to prevent infestations. The acidic vinegar acts as a natural repellent to flies and can dehydrate and kill maggots on contact.
In the video caption, the creator explains: "A great tip to stop flies and maggots in the bin. Pop some bread soaked in vinegar at the bottom. I always bag up all my garbage to keep the bin a lot cleaner. No more flies or maggots."
Why vinegar works
House Digest reports that maggots have a specific pH range for survival. Vinegar's acidity disrupts this balance, making the environment uninhabitable and lethal. Within hours, the maggot population noticeably decreases.
In the comments, one user asked how much bread to use, and the creator replied: "I pop two slices and yes that's the plan." Another commenter confirmed the method works, while a third suggested spraying white vinegar and water as an alternative, or using Jeyes fluid after emptying the bin.
Other uses for bread
