JJ Gabriel is eligible to play in the Premier League this season, but the 15-year-old Manchester United starlet still must follow three club rules due to his age.
The teenager made his unofficial first-team debut in United's pre-season friendly win over Atletico Madrid earlier this month, becoming the youngest-ever player to feature for the senior side after coming on for Bryan Mbeumo in the 82nd minute. More senior appearances could follow this campaign, as Gabriel turns 16 in October, making him eligible for top-flight action.
Gambling Sponsorship Ban
One strict rule prevents Gabriel from wearing United's new training kit sponsor, Betway, due to gambling regulations. The Red Devils signed a £20million-per-year deal with the betting company, which now sponsors their training wear. Gabriel, along with every other under-18 player in the Premier League, cannot wear club gear promoting gambling firms. This comes despite the top-flight's impending 2026/27 season ban on betting companies as front-of-shirt sponsors, a rule first agreed in April 2023. The ban does not stop betting firms from appearing on shirt sleeves, training kits, or in stadiums.
Changing Room and Contract Restrictions
Gabriel also remains barred from using United's first-team changing rooms. Premier League regulations require under-18 players to change separately from senior squad members for both training and matches. He can enter the changing room only after team-mates are dressed, allowing manager Michael Carrick to give team talks. Additionally, Gabriel cannot sign a professional contract until his 17th birthday on October 6, 2027, meaning he stays on youth terms for over a year.
