Cruden Bay, a small village in Aberdeenshire, has been named one of the best retirement destinations in the UK by WorldAtlas. The list of eight locations includes two in Scotland, with Cruden Bay and Troon in South Ayrshire both featured.
Peaceful seaside escape
Described as a "peaceful seaside escape" by VisitAberdeenshire, Cruden Bay is popular with walkers and hikers due to its picturesque setting along the Aberdeenshire coast. The village is known for its soft sandy beaches, enchanting fishing harbour, and spectacular coastal views.
WorldAtlas praised Cruden Bay for having "one of the finest" walks in the UK, highlighting the coastal route from Cruden Bay Beach to Slains Castle. The cliff-top ruin is said to have inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Local amenities and golf
The Harbour Dunes café was also praised for its charming seaside setting and large windows with ocean views. The café serves breakfast until 11am, with lunch options including Cullen skink, burgers, sandwiches, and loaded fries.
Golfers were directed to the renowned Cruden Bay Golf Club, where the game has reportedly been played since 1791. The village also has a medical practice and a "high-standard care home serving the wider community," according to WorldAtlas.
Troon also featured
Troon in South Ayrshire is the other Scottish location on the list. The seaside town, about eight miles from Ayr and three miles from Glasgow Prestwick Airport, is known for its clean beaches with views to Arran and Ailsa Craig.
