A man has written to Daily Star agony aunt Jane O'Gorman after his girlfriend broke off their engagement to marry a wealthy man she barely knows, leaving him facing eviction from their shared flat.
The reader, who says he is "devastated," explained that his partner has become engaged to the son of a business associate of her uncle. He described the new man as "astute and going places, but flash with it," citing his "great pad, fast car, and huge selection of rare trainers."
The couple currently live in a flat owned by her uncle, and she has told him she wants him out. During an argument, she offered him £2,000 to leave. He wrote: "How insulting is that? Is that what she thinks I'm worth after years of love and commitment?"
Still sexually active despite wedding plans
Despite the split, the man said they remain sexually active, with his ex saying they "may as well" keep sleeping together. She is open about marrying for money, saying she is "sick of working" and does not want children, believing her new partner will give her "the cushy life she craves."
She is planning a wedding in Crete for June 2027 and expects their mutual friends to attend. Those friends, he claims, are already anticipating "lavish parties and free trips to the rich moron's Italian villa" and have told him to move on without making a fuss.
Jane's advice: leave with dignity
In her response, Jane said there is "no value in looking backwards" and that the girlfriend's life is her business. She advised the man to "pack your stuff, leave with dignity, and start the long climb back with a clean break."
On the £2,000 offer, she said: "Whether you take the £2,000 is up to you, but don't allow pride to leave you out of pocket." She also urged him to talk to family about housing options and to avoid feeling bitter or resentful, as that will only bring him down.
Jane concluded with a firm warning: "All intimacy needs to end today. I know this is tough, but you need to start protecting your heart - and your sexual health, especially if she's having sex with her other man too." She also cautioned against becoming her back-up plan if the new relationship fails.
