A 16-year-old boy will spend months in custody on remand after he was charged over a violent stabbing at a party in Sydney's west that left another teenager fighting for his life.
Details of the Alleged Attack
Police allege the incident unfolded on Tuesday night outside a house in Shalvey. It is claimed the 16-year-old, who cannot be named, approached a 17-year-old boy while armed with a knife just before 10:40pm.
According to the police case, the younger teen unsheathed the weapon and stabbed the 17-year-old up to three times. The prosecutor told the court the initial attack occurred while the victim was allegedly being held by another person.
The alleged attacker then fled, but police claim he later returned to the scene to inflict further blows. The 17-year-old victim was left bleeding profusely, with a trail of blood marking his path before he received emergency medical aid.
Court Hearing and Bail Refusal
The 16-year-old faced Parramatta Children's Court on Friday, where his application for bail was strongly opposed. Police arrested him at a Blacktown shopping centre on Thursday, charging him with attempted murder.
The police prosecutor outlined a strong evidential case, citing DNA evidence linking the accused to the scene, CCTV footage, and witness statements from some of the 40 people attending the party.
Magistrate Estelle Hawdon denied bail, stating she was not satisfied any conditions could mitigate the risks. She found a real risk the teen could endanger the community, interfere with witnesses or evidence, or fail to appear in court if released.
Ongoing Investigation and Victim's Condition
The court heard the 16-year-old has a history of violence, including a prior conviction for robbery in company. His lawyer argued he was engaged with school and part-time work, suggesting strict bail conditions could address any concerns.
However, Magistrate Hawdon described the allegations as "a really serious and shocking incident". She noted there were indications the 17-year-old had been stabbed by others during the brawl, though no one else has been charged.
The injured teenager remains in a critical condition in hospital. Unless a successful bail application is made in the NSW Supreme Court, the accused will remain in custody until the matter returns to court in March.
