A shooting at a traditional Christmas lights switch-on in Concord, North Carolina, has left four people in hospital. The event in the city's central square was cancelled after a gunman opened fire on Thursday evening as families gathered to celebrate.
Distressing video shared online shows crowds running in fear after the shots were fired. Witnesses described hearing loud pops, initially mistaken for fireworks. "I thought the fireworks went off," said Marquis Jenkins, a local resident at the ceremony. "My daughter thought the fireworks went off."
Police confirmed that four people were taken to hospital, three with serious injuries and one in a stable condition. Organisers cancelled the event minutes after the attack, and officers cordoned off the area where fireworks and entertainment had been planned.
Concord Police are investigating footage and speaking to witnesses. They have appealed for anyone with information to call 704-920-5027. One woman told a local TV station: "There were three loud pops... then I just saw a sea of people running." Another guest expressed concern for the children present, saying: "They had to see that."
The investigation continues, with roads closed and bus routes diverted. Meanwhile, a separate shooting outside a gym in Portland, Oregon, this week left one person dead and another injured. No arrests have been made in either case.
