Woodchurch stabbing: man, 60s, seriously injured; arrest made

A man in his 60s was stabbed outside a parade of shops in Woodchurch, Wirral, in broad daylight on Thursday, June 25, and remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition, Merseyside Police said.

Incident details

Police were called to Hoole Road around 3:40pm following reports of a stabbing. The victim sustained stab wounds to his shoulder and ribcage. Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was taken to hospital, where he remains. Neighbours said the victim is disabled and unable to speak.

A large police cordon was set up across the row of shops on Hoole Road, including a Co-op, Sayers, a pharmacy, and a chip shop. Part of The Meadow, which links Hoole Road with Pemberton Road, was also taped off. Detectives, uniformed officers, and a police dog were at the scene.

Arrest and investigation

Police arrested a 40-year-old man from Noctorum on suspicion of Section 18 assault. He remains in police custody for questioning on Friday, June 26. The police cordon will remain in place for most of the day as enquiries continue.

Detective Inspector Andy Schofield said: "An investigation is underway after a man has suffered a serious injury on Hoole Road as a result of the offender’s actions, and is getting the care he needs in hospital. Although our officers have made a swift arrest just hours after the assault, we are appealing to anyone who was on Hoole Road at around 3.40pm to get in touch with police."

Appeal for witnesses

Schofield added: "At the time of this incident, it would have been busy with people coming home from work or visiting shops in the area so please contact us if you saw what happened. Knife crime has no place on our streets and it is vital that those responsible for carrying or using knives are found and brought to justice. If you know anything about this incident, or have information about those carrying, storing and using knives in Merseyside, please come forward and we will continue to take action."
