A woman who moved into a new home was left furious after her neighbour immediately demanded parking rights to her driveway, claiming the landlord had promised the space to her. The incident, shared on Reddit, sparked outrage and advice from users.
Neighbour claims landlord promised driveway space
The woman, who had recently moved into a rented property with a driveway leading to a carport, was confronted by the renter of the house behind hers. The neighbour insisted that the owner had "promised" she could park in the driveway because she was "here first." The woman said: "And the leasing agency was ZERO help because they can't speak on what the owner has done with these renters. She wouldn't even move her car when we were moving in for ease of unloading."
Property layout leads to confusion
The woman explained the layout: "There is an alley parallel with my street. Between my street and the alleyway, each lot has two houses on it. We have completely different addresses, but both my house and the house behind me are two different addresses." She was forced to park in her front yard due to insufficient street parking for both her and her husband's vehicles.
Reddit users advise legal action
Commenters on Reddit were quick to offer advice. One user suggested: "Read your lease. If your lease says the driveway is your property that you are renting. Call the police and have her ticketed and towed. It doesn't matter what anyone said verbally what does it say in writing?" Another added: "Write a cease and desist letter, you don't need to have an attorney to do this. Cite this specific part of your lease, or even include a copy of this part. Give a deadline to remove the car from your property and threaten to contact law enforcement."
Tenant rights and legal boundaries
A further commenter noted: "The landlord can't give rights to something he doesn't own. Her legal rights as a tenant are set out in her lease. If it isn't in the lease, it isn't part of her legal agreement for the lease of the property." They advised telling the neighbour to show her lease proving the right to park, or face having the car towed.
