A homeowner has expressed fury after discovering their neighbour has been slowly stealing parts of their garden to make their own property appear more attractive to potential buyers. The victim, who shared the ordeal on Reddit, said the neighbour has listed their house for sale and has been cutting approximately 50 feet into their yard whenever they are not home.
The neighbour's realtor reportedly took pictures of the victim's yard and included it in the listing, claiming the property has a 'spacious backyard'. In reality, the neighbour's house is placed further back on their lot, giving them a larger front yard. The listing also falsely advertises 'lake access' and the 'ability to build your own dock', when the lake is actually across the road.
The homeowner has confronted the neighbour about the encroachment, but to no avail. 'They wait until we leave and cut it again,' they said. 'Odd thing is, they never cut past the property line until they listed it for sale.' The victim has now arranged for a property survey, noting that the neighbourhood has never had a formal survey done.
Commenters on the Reddit post offered advice, with one suggesting erecting a temporary fence with 'no trespassing' signs once the survey is complete. Another warned that recovering stolen land after a sale could be difficult and recommended getting a lawyer involved. A third user jokingly suggested placing tacky yard decorations along the property line.
