A 20-year-old woman has been charged with aggravated arson after a massive wildfire broke out on moorland at Dovestone Reservoir in Greater Manchester, an incident believed to have been started by a firework. Shania Care-Slede, of Market Street, Hyde, faces charges of aggravated arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered, and dangerous driving. She has been remanded into custody and is due to appear at Manchester Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, July 14.
Firefighting Efforts Continue
Firefighters from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were first called to the Oldham site on Saturday night. The blaze, which has been burning for four days, prompted a major incident declaration on Monday afternoon as crews worked to contain the fire and prevent further spread across the moorland amid hot weather conditions. As of Tuesday, approximately 70 firefighters, 11 fire engines, and four wildfire units remain on scene, with the fire in a steady state but still active.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service stated: "The moorland fire remains active but is currently in a steady state... Crews remain on scene carrying out firefighting operations to contain and reduce hotspots, supported by partner agencies." They noted that progress will be influenced by weather conditions, which are being closely monitored.
Police Investigation and Charges
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed the charges against Care-Slede in connection with the ongoing fire at Dovestones Reservoir. A GMP spokesperson said: "These charges relate to an ongoing fire at Dovestones Reservoir, which remains under investigation. Officers are continuing to pursue a number of lines of enquiry and are seeking to identify any other individuals who may have been involved."
Detective Inspector Andrew Day added: "While we have secured charges against one individual, our investigation remains ongoing. Detectives are carefully reviewing all available evidence to identify anyone else who may have been involved in criminality linked to this incident. We're committed to pursuing all those responsible. Anyone identified as having committed a criminal offence can expect to be robustly dealt with."

Police have urged the public to avoid speculation online due to active criminal proceedings. The fire service advised people in surrounding areas to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed if smoke is visible, and to open them once the smoke has passed, while being mindful of changing conditions.
Road closures remain in place, and the public is urged not to travel to the area to ensure emergency vehicles and equipment can operate safely. The fire service thanked local communities for their patience and cooperation.
