US woman ends romance with Scots fan facing charges

Boston woman Jill Roberts, 42, has ended her viral World Cup romance with Tartan Army fan Tommy Morrison, 38, from Bonnyrigg, after he appeared in court on serious criminal charges. The couple met during the World Cup when the Tartan Army descended on Fenway Park on June 16, and their chance meeting swiftly evolved into a transatlantic romance.

Romance ends after court appearance

Jill, an American singer, had arranged flights to Scotland to visit Tommy, a joiner, at the end of August. But just two months after their love story captured hearts online, Tommy appeared in court earlier this year on charges of offences under Solemn Procedure, typically adjudicated by a judge and a jury of 15 people.

In a heartfelt video posted online, Jill announced she had terminated the relationship. She said: "I really don't like the position I am in right now. I know many of you have said that I don't have to explain myself to anyone, which is totally true. We are all adults. We can do our own thing. I don't owe anyone an explanation on any decisions that I make."

Jill's explanation

She continued: "But, I'm in this position where I went pretty public with a relationship and now things have changed. Where do things stand with me and Tommy? I've let him know that it's over for me based on some things that happened. I don't think he's a bad person. I think he's got a lot of great qualities and charisma. But, he has some unresolved connections with the past that he needs to resolve or pursue."

Jill made it clear that, despite calling time on the romance, she was departing "feeling good" and outlined her reasons for making the split public. She said: "If I have learned anything since coming out of religious control, getting divorced and really finding myself in the last five or six years, is that life is very short. It can be taken away so quickly. So, I am really intentional about my time, my peace and my happiness. I am walking away from this relationship with my head held high, feeling good and having clarity on it. It is what it is."

How they met

The duo first met after Jill attended the Boston Red Sox versus Toronto Blue Jays match for Pride Night, unaware that thousands of Scotland fans would also flood the iconic ballpark. As she made her way to her vehicle, she encountered Tommy, who was heading towards the train station. The pair had a brief conversation and Jill filmed their meeting, but they parted ways without swapping contact information.

She later confessed she instantly wished she'd secured his details. Destiny stepped in when one of Tommy's former partners noticed Jill's social media post and revealed she was acquainted with him. Jill then succeeded in obtaining Tommy's number and the duo started exchanging messages on WhatsApp. Their bond rapidly deepened, with Tommy splashing out over £100 on an Uber from Gillette Stadium following Scotland's loss to Morocco in Foxborough just to meet Jill.

At the time, Jill described the romance as an unforeseen blessing from Scotland's World Cup journey, explaining they had bonded over their mutual cultures and laid-back attitudes. The breakup leaves Jill confronting an unforeseen predicament regarding the Scotland journey she had arranged during the peak of their whirlwind romance.

Uncertainty over Scotland trip

She had previously disclosed that she had purchased a flight ticket to visit Tommy at the end of August. At the time, she said: "I would never have thought I'd be visiting Scotland a month after all of the Scottish fans visited Boston. I was completely surprised by the whole thing." Tommy had also expressed enthusiasm about the planned get-together, joking that Jill believed everyone in Scotland lived in castles and wore kilts every day.

He had promised to organise a special surprise so she could experience the country in full. However, with the romance now finished, Jill has been left wondering whether the journey should proceed. In her video, she posed one final question to her followers: "There's one remaining question - Do I just cancel my trip now or do I still go to Scotland and have a different trip than what I was expecting?"
