The collision happened shortly before several people died in a crash on the A66 in Cleveland, North Yorkshire, following a police pursuit. The police watchdog, IOPC, has launched an investigation into that incident as a pursuit was involved.

In Kent, a stretch of the M20 was closed between junction J4 and J6 following another overnight crash. The motorway has been shut into the afternoon after a serious crash at about 3.20am today. Further details on the condition and number of any casualties have not been revealed yet.
