Two men drowned at Seaton Carew beach near Hartlepool on Sunday after entering the water to rescue two children struggling in the sea. Wayne Taylor and Ian Pascoe, 62, died in the incident, which occurred around 3:45 p.m. The children, a nine-year-old boy and his younger sister, survived.
Heroic Actions and Tragic Outcome
Ian Pascoe was walking on the beach with his wife and granddaughter when he saw Wayne Taylor enter the water to save his children. Pascoe handed his phone to his wife, saying, “Here, hold this for me, I will be back in a bit,” and followed Taylor in. Both men perished before reaching the children. The RNLI brought their bodies to shore.
Dan Pascoe, Ian’s son, paid tribute: “He was the kind of person who has always done the right thing. He stood up for what he thought was right and took action when other people might have stood by and watched. I am so proud of him.” Pascoe had recently returned from working in Saudi Arabia to spend more time with family.
Family Support for Water Safety Campaign
Both families have backed the Mirror’s ‘Save Lives For Sam’ campaign, which calls for compulsory water safety lessons in schools, better lifesaving equipment at high-risk waterways, the introduction of Sam’s Law, and a dedicated Minister for Water Safety. A member of Wayne Taylor’s family urged an end to criticism of the children’s mother on social media: “The mum did nothing wrong. She needs to grieve without this hate campaign.”
Community and Political Reaction
Hartlepool MP Jonathan Brash called it “a heartbreaking tragedy.” He said: “Two men went into the sea to help children in difficulty. Those children were saved. The two men who went to help did not come home.” Eyewitness Keith Smith described a huge rescue operation with hundreds watching. Davey Short, who helped bring the children out, said: “The mother was hysterical. I managed to get hold of the boy.”
Jess Cole, cousin of a teenager who drowned nearby in 2021, said: “My heart goes out to the two men. It brought back horrendous memories.” A fundraiser has been set up for Wayne Taylor’s family.
