Two dead in horror crash on busy Manchester road after car ploughs into digger

Two people have died in a crash on the A57 Hyde Road in Gorton, Manchester, after a car hit a stationary digger.

Incident details

The collision occurred at around 9.35pm on Wednesday (August 5). Emergency services were called to the scene. Four people were inside the car at the time, according to a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson. A man and a woman died at the scene.

Two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries. They were subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and are now in police custody.

Investigation and appeal

The road was cordoned off from Balmoral Drive to Debdale Lane for accident investigation work overnight. Police initially reported the car had collided with a house but later confirmed it had hit a digger.

Detective Sergeant Louise Warhurst, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims in this tragic incident. We are appealing for any witnesses who may have saw the moments leading up to this incident, or anyone who has mobile phone, Ring doorbell or dash cam footage, to come forward and assist our investigation.
