Twenty-four years after BBC presenter Jill Dando was shot dead on her doorstep in Fulham, a new Netflix documentary series reopens one of Britain's most notorious unsolved murders. The three-part series, titled 'Who Killed Jill Dando?', features first-hand accounts from family, friends, and police, examining the many theories surrounding her death.
Dando, 37, was a beloved Crimewatch and Holiday presenter, described as 'the golden girl of British television'. She was killed with a single bullet in broad daylight in April 1999. Despite a massive police investigation, no one has been convicted.
The documentary explores theories ranging from a crazed stalker to a professional hitman, including a claim that she was executed in revenge for NATO bombing of Serbian state TV. However, Dando's brother Nigel suggests she may have been a random victim, saying: 'Jill was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.'
Nigel Dando, a journalist himself, notes that CCTV showed she was not followed home, and she was rarely at her own address, having moved in with her fiancé. He believes the killer may have been someone who recognised her and wanted notoriety.
Executive producer Emma Cooper, who also worked on the Madeleine McCann series, says it was important to keep Dando's memory and legacy at the forefront. She describes the case as 'the perfect mystery from start to finish', noting that such a crime 'just doesn't happen in England'.
