Thief soils himself after handbrake getaway fail

A bungling thief attempted to steal a car with the handbrake still engaged, then soiled himself after being apprehended by a have-a-go hero in Perth, Western Australia.

Failed Getaway

The suspect allegedly stole six bottles of alcohol from a Dan Murphy's bottle shop before trying to flee in a battered grey Mazda CX-5. The vehicle had no number plates, a damaged bumper, and a missing side mirror. Footage filmed by onlooker Adam Breen shows the car moving agonisingly slowly around the car park, leaving tyre marks as it struggled to gain momentum.

Breen, a 28-year-old plumber, can be heard laughing in the video, saying, 'You are joking?' as the car turned onto a busy road with its rear wheels still locked.

Citizen's Arrest

Breen told followers that he confronted the alleged car thief in a nearby park after the man abandoned his first vehicle and tried to break into more cars. 'There were kids over there, so I went and grabbed him and took him down,' Breen said. 'I had him in a body triangle and my left nut was in agony. So I bridged him up and gone to adjust my left nut.'

During the struggle, the thief headbutted Breen, giving him a black eye. However, Breen managed to hold him down until police arrived. 'The cherry on top was that he s*** himself, he soiled his pants,' Breen added. 'I was very glad to see the police pull up, I was worried the squeeze I had on him was going to inject some of that out of his pants.'

Social Media Praise

Breen shared the video on Instagram, where it was widely circulated. The official account of drinks brand Solo Australia commented, 'Our hero.' Other users praised his actions, with one saying, 'Somebody buy this guy a few beers for me please,' and another adding, 'Doing god’s work. Streets are safer thanks to you, lad.'

Breen told local media, 'A pretty odd night... but Dan Murphy’s gave me the six pack for free.'
