A festive New Year's Eve celebration on Hampstead Heath turned to tragedy when sixteen-year-old Harry Pitman was fatally stabbed in what police are treating as murder.
The incident occurred just before midnight on Sunday as revellers gathered to watch fireworks and welcome 2024. Despite the efforts of emergency services and paramedics who rushed to the scene, the teenager was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
Murder Investigation Underway
Detective Chief Inspector Geoff Grogan, leading the investigation from the Metropolitan Police's Specialist Crime Command, confirmed that a murder investigation has been launched. "This is an incredibly tragic incident that has left a family devastated and a community in shock," DCI Grogan stated.
Police have confirmed that no arrests have been made and are urgently appealing for witnesses to come forward. Officers believe there were numerous people in the vicinity who may have witnessed the altercation or events leading up to the stabbing.
Community in Mourning
The killing has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing their horror that such violence could occur during what should have been a celebratory occasion. Local residents described Hampstead Heath as typically being a peaceful area, making the incident particularly shocking.
Forensic teams have been conducting extensive searches of the area, while family liaison officers are supporting Harry's grieving family. The Metropolitan Police have increased patrols in the area to reassure concerned residents.
Appeal for Information
Investigators are urging anyone who was on Hampstead Heath between 11:30 PM on New Year's Eve and 12:30 AM on New Year's Day to come forward with any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem.
DCI Grogan emphasised: "We need to piece together exactly what happened in the moments leading up to Harry's death. If you saw anything suspicious, witnessed an altercation, or have any footage from the area, please contact us immediately."
