A 15-year-old girl was discovered lying in a pool of blood by her mother after returning home from a neighbour's post-funeral ritual. The incident occurred in Hailakandi district, Assam, India, where police are investigating the alleged rape and murder.
Investigation and Arrests
The teenager was alone at home when the attack is believed to have happened in the early hours of August 1. After finding her daughter, the mother alerted neighbours, who called the police. Officers questioned five people and arrested three suspects, but two were later released, leaving two adults and one juvenile accused.
Post-Mortem Findings
Police said preliminary post-mortem findings showed evidence of sexual assault. A local court granted six days' custody of the two adult suspects, aged 18 and 19, as investigators sought more time to establish the circumstances. The juvenile suspect is being handled separately under India's Juvenile Justice Act.
Special Investigation Team
A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by the district's additional superintendent of police (Crime), has been set up to oversee a scientific and time-bound investigation. Investigators have seized over 20 evidence materials, including blood samples, bloodstained clothing, and a sharp-edged weapon, which will undergo forensic examination.
Public Outrage
Police are examining all aspects, including possible involvement of others, motive, and planning. The girl's death has sparked widespread outrage in Hailakandi, with social, cultural, and women's organisations holding candlelight marches and demonstrations.
