A 20-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after being shot on Christmas Day in Sheffield, in what police have described as an 'abhorrent' act of violence.
Christmas Night Attack in Darnall
The incident occurred on Wilfred Drive in the Darnall area shortly before 11:30pm on Thursday, December 25th. Emergency services were called to the scene at 11.27pm after reports that a man had been shot in the chest.
The victim was rushed to hospital, where he remained on Boxing Day in a critical, life-threatening condition.
Swift Police Action and Arrests
South Yorkshire Police detectives launched an immediate investigation, leading to the swift arrest of four men in connection with the incident.
The four suspects, aged 20, 22, 28, and 29, were all arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remain in police custody.
On Friday afternoon, a significant police presence remained at the scene. Wilfred Drive and a 100-metre stretch of Wilfrid Road were sealed behind a cordon, with police vehicles stationed at either end near the busy Staniforth Road.
Community Shock and Police Appeal
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the local community. One resident living near the scene told reporters: 'It's such a shock. Nobody deserves this to happen to them... This is a safe place. You can go about your business, no problem. But things just get out of hand with disagreements.'
Chief Inspector Andy Knowles of South Yorkshire Police condemned the attack, stating: 'This is an abhorrent incident that has left a man fighting for his life. Gun crime poses a great threat to the safety and wellbeing of our community... It will not be tolerated under any circumstances.'
He emphasised the force's commitment to taking firm, decisive action against anyone involved in violence or illegal firearms, but stressed that public assistance is vital. Police will maintain a presence in the area to address community concerns.
Officers have issued an urgent appeal for information, particularly asking anyone with mobile phone footage, dashcam, or CCTV from the area around the time of the shooting to come forward. They have thanked those who have already assisted with inquiries.
