Prince Harry has arrived in the UK without his wife Meghan Markle or their children, Archie and Lilibet, just hours after Buckingham Palace withdrew its offer of accommodation. The duke's solo trip comes ahead of his scheduled appearance in Birmingham later this week to mark one year until the 2027 Invictus Games.
Security Dispute and Accommodation Withdrawal
Harry's journey has been fraught with complications. Sources indicate he had originally planned to bring his family, expecting temporary security provisions while on British soil. However, his bid for taxpayer-funded protection was rejected by the Home Office, leaving him reportedly furious and deeply upset. He is also awaiting a review by the Risk Management Board (RMB), part of the Ravec process, but learned last week it has yet to be carried out.
Earlier on Saturday, it was confirmed that Harry would no longer stay at Buckingham Palace during his visit. The Mirror had previously disclosed that King Charles offered Harry accommodation, and a spokesperson stated Harry had accepted. However, the Palace later confirmed the offer was withdrawn as the accommodation was no longer available. Buckingham Palace has 240 bedrooms, with 52 for royals and guests, and requires adequate advance notice to host visitors. A royal insider revealed that Harry waited until the eleventh hour to accept, leading to the rescindment.
Family Separation and King Charles
With Meghan and the children absent, it appears unlikely the King will have the opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren. The monarch has only met Archie a few times and Lilibet once, in summer 2022. It has been suggested the Sussexes could visit the King at Highgrove or Sandringham on Saturday, but no formal request has been made. Harry last saw his father in September 2025.
Upcoming Engagements
During his UK visit, Harry will carry out several commitments, including a meeting with the Invictus Games Foundation at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. In Birmingham, he is expected to visit Birmingham Children's Hospital to mark the 20th anniversary of WellChild's first WellChild Nurse. As Global Ambassador for Scotty's Little Soldiers, he was also due to attend the Scotty's Summer Festival at Maxstoke Castle in Warwickshire.
