Patients and staff were evacuated from a hospital in Buenos Aires after a fire broke out on Monday, September 7. The blaze occurred at Braulio Aurelio Moyano Neuropsychiatric Hospital in the Barracas neighbourhood. The cause of the fire remains unclear.
Evacuation and medical response
At least 50 patients were treated on site, while two were transferred to other hospitals, according to reports. Firefighters from the city were working at the 17-hectare property. The operation involved 16 Emergency Medical Care System (SAME) mobile units.
Second blaze in two years
The incident on Monday is the second blaze at the hospital - which has almost 1,500 beds and 37 assistance services - in just over two years. In May 2024, flames spread through the second-floor attic of the hospital, causing part of the structure to collapse. Sixty-six patients were evacuated in that incident.
Questions were raised over the hospital's conditions, maintenance and the budget allocated to the establishment.
