Passenger Claims Mother-Daughter Duo Made Flight Uncomfortable Over Seating Plan
Passenger Claims Mother-Daughter Duo Made Flight Uncomfortable

A passenger has ignited a debate online after alleging that a mother and daughter made their connecting flight deeply uncomfortable because their seating plan had been thwarted. The traveler, who shared the story on Reddit, explained they were assigned the middle seat on a packed flight, only to find the pair already settled in the aisle and window seats.

Upon boarding, the passenger discovered the duo had spread their belongings across the middle seat. When asked to move their items, the daughter grumbled throughout the process. The passenger said: "I let them know it was my seat and the daughter grumbled the whole time while moving her bag."

Armrest Dispute and Physical Invasion

The situation worsened when the passenger sat down. Both women had raised the armrests, hoping for extra room. When the passenger insisted on lowering them before takeoff, the mother objected. The passenger recounted: "The mother told me she was more comfortable with the armrest up. I smiled and apologised, but explained I needed it down."

According to the passenger, the plus-sized duo repeatedly "spilled into their seat," placing arms and legs over the shared armrests despite multiple requests to stop. The traveler even proposed swapping seats with either woman so they could sit together more comfortably, but both refused.

Suspected Seating Strategy Backfires

The passenger suspects the mother and daughter intentionally reserved the window and aisle seats hoping no one would be assigned the middle seat, and became irritated when their strategy failed on a full flight. "They kept talking loudly over me and passing things back and forth. I eventually asked them to stop because they were constantly reaching across me. It was a full flight so there was nowhere else I could move," the passenger added.

Social media users largely backed the passenger, arguing that booking window and aisle seats does not guarantee the middle seat will remain vacant. One user commented: "I'm guessing they bought the window and the aisle seats in the hopes that nobody would take the middle seat and they could sprawl, but it being a full flight messed up their plans."

Another user shared a creative solution: "People like them are why I carry two folding plastic boards in my carryon. They look like flat plastic lunch trays when I unfold them. They go between the edge of the seat and the armrest and create a wall on either side of my seat. I give up the armrest but oversized people next to me can't ooze into my space."

A third user expressed sympathy: "I once sat in the wrong seat and I was so embarrassed! I rapidly skedaddled to my actual seat while apologising."
