A Northumbria Police officer borrowed a teenager's bicycle to apprehend a prolific shoplifter in South Shields. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 7, when police received reports of a man behaving aggressively at a supermarket on Stanhope Road.
Officers from multiple teams were dispatched to locate Philip Padgett, 32, who had fled the store carrying packets of steak. After a brief foot chase, a firearms officer resorted to borrowing a bike from a teenage bystander. He then pedaled after Padgett, who had discarded the steaks in a bush in an attempt to evade capture.
Padgett was swiftly arrested, and the bike was returned undamaged to its owner, who received thanks from the arresting officer. Later that day, Padgett, of no fixed address, was charged in connection with over 30 shoplifting incidents. On Monday, June 8, he pleaded guilty at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court to thefts totaling nearly £6,000 and was sentenced to 40 weeks in prison.
Police Praise Community Cooperation
Inspector David Heron of the local Neighbourhood Policing Team commended the teamwork involved: “This is a fantastic example of swift and effective justice when everyone works together. I’d like to thank all three teams deployed, including response and firearms officers, and my Neighbourhood Policing Team who secured charges. A massive thank you goes to the teenage boy who lent his bike, enabling us to arrest a prolific criminal.”
Inspector Heron added: “We hope this shows we take reports of disruption seriously and deploy appropriate resources to achieve results. We’re keen to work with residents and businesses to keep South Tyneside safe. Report incidents to us, and we’ll take action.”
