A woman has been left baffled after her neighbour demanded she move her vegetable garden because it allegedly makes her dog unhappy and causes incessant barking. The Reddit user, who shared her story online, says her neighbour approached her and insisted she 'do something' about her garden, claiming the dog 'doesn't like it'.
Neighbour's Unusual Request
The woman, who describes her vegetable patch as her 'happy place', initially thought the neighbour was asking her to physically relocate the entire garden—an impossible task. However, the neighbour specifically objected to the small but thriving vegetable patch near the shared fence, which contains tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries. According to the woman, the neighbour said: 'My dog doesn't like it. Every time he looks at it, he starts barking like crazy. He doesn't do that anywhere else. I think it's the smell of your compost, or maybe just the way it looks, whatever. Can you move it back a little so it's more hidden and he doesn't see it?'
Woman's Response and Escalation
The woman suggested the dog would eventually get used to the unfamiliar smells, but the neighbour remained adamant that the vegetables must be moved to another part of the garden. The neighbour then warned: 'The barking makes everything so uncomfortable. He barks really loudly because of your garden, and it's going to inconvenience other neighbours. Do you want to cause problems in the neighbourhood?'
A few days later, the woman discovered that the neighbour had been telling others that she was the cause of the barking and had 'refused to cooperate'. The woman wrote: 'So apparently, my tomatoes are now the local menace.'
Online Reactions
Commenters on Reddit were equally baffled by the neighbour's unreasonable demand, with most urging the woman to stand her ground. One user remarked: 'As if you can just roll the damn thing up and move it. You better wash those tomatoes off really well before you eat them. Why do stupid people have to ruin everything?' Another added: 'Just say no. The dog will get over it. Dogs take three to six months to adjust to environmental changes, unless the owner caters to the dog.' A third wrote: 'You might want to aim a video camera at your garden in case she or the dog destroys it!'
