Mum-of-four dies after bin bag fire explosion burns 50% of body

A 32-year-old mother of four died after a paint canister inside a bin bag exploded when she placed it on a garden fire, an inquest has heard.

Katie Louise Marshall, from Vaughan Williams Drive, Newport, suffered burns to around 50 per cent of her body, Newport Coroners' Court was told.

Hospital transfers and respiratory failure

Following the incident in June, Ms Marshall was first taken to the Grange University Hospital before being transferred to Morriston Hospital's specialist burns unit in Swansea.

The inquest heard she began showing significant respiratory failure and was moved to Bristol Royal Infirmary. She died on September 24, around two months after the incident.

Tributes and memorial

In the days after her death, social media tributes remembered Katie as a "kind" and "beautiful" mother who "touched the hearts of so many people."

Her family and friends released pink balloons and set off pink fireworks as a memorial on September 25, the day after her death.

Senior Coroner Caroline Saunders said the inquest is due to resume on June 9, 2027, at 11am.
