Meghan Markle has left King Charles "disappointed and upset" with her decision not to join Prince Harry on his UK trip, according to royal insiders. The move has added further strain to a relationship that was once described as friendly and loving but has deteriorated over years of family turmoil.
Security Concerns Prevent Royal Reunion
Harry and Meghan had originally planned to travel to the UK together with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, for what was hoped to be a royal reunion. However, the couple's police protection was reduced after they stepped down as working royals in 2020, and they were not granted security for the planned trip. While Harry is in the UK to celebrate the Invictus Games, Meghan has stayed away, citing security concerns.
A source told journalist Rob Shuter on his Substack: "This was one insult too many. Meghan feels they've bent over backwards for Harry's family, only to be embarrassed again. As far as she's concerned, she'll never see them again."
Missed Opportunity for Reconciliation
Former royal butler Grant Harrold told OLBG that Meghan's return could have been a significant turning point. He said: "This trip could have been a big turning point for Meghan, as it could have been a huge step in terms of relations between her and the royals. A private, in-person meeting with her in-laws was the next positive step on their path to fix the upset. It also could have done wonders for her in terms of public perception."
Harrold added: "If she doesn't come, it's not going to fix anything. I think she's basically saying if it doesn't happen on our terms, it's not going to happen. Even if that's not what they intended, that's how it's coming across."
He expressed concern for King Charles, stating: "I think he'll be really upset, not just about missing out on the meeting but also on what it means for the future. I'd be interested to know if Meghan messaged the King personally to apologise."
Prince Harry's Solo Visit
Prince Harry arrived in the UK for a five-day visit to London and Birmingham, landing just hours after his accommodation offer at Buckingham Palace was revoked. While there is a possibility that Harry may fly Meghan and the children in from Europe for less than 24 hours, a reunion between Meghan and the King appears increasingly unlikely.
