McGregor branded 'dirtbag' by Poirier after UFC injury loss

Dustin Poirier has branded Conor McGregor a 'dirtbag' after the Irishman's UFC comeback ended in injury just 69 seconds into his fight against Max Holloway. Poirier, who fought McGregor three times, said the injury 'couldn't have happened to a better guy.'

Poirier's scathing remarks

McGregor returned to the cage last weekend for the first time since breaking his leg in his trilogy fight with Poirier five years ago. However, his comeback lasted only 69 seconds when he injured his knee, leading to the fight being waved off. McGregor now faces surgery and another lay-off.

Poirier questioned McGregor's decision to start the fight with a flamboyant jump kick, calling it a 'Hail Mary.' 'I thought it couldn't have happened to a better guy,' Poirier said. 'That injury couldn't happen to a better guy. I saw earlier this week, he said, 'Karma's a mirror,' and it definitely is, man.'

'This guy's a dirtbag, and I don't know if it was nervous energy, I don't know why you would start a fight like that,' Poirier added. 'They're saying this was planned to start the fight like that. There's footage of him training to open the fight with this jump kick, but I just don't understand why you would do that. That's like a Hail Mary. You're throwing a Hail Mary to start a fight, start a 25-minute fight. I don't understand what was going on with that.'

Poirier open to fourth fight

Despite his comments, Poirier is willing to welcome McGregor back for a fourth fight. 'I'll tell you what, whenever he is healed up, hit me up Conor,' he added. 'I'll come back and whip you again.'

McGregor insists he will fight out the remaining bout on his UFC contract but revealed he must first go under the knife. 'Surgery. Prehab. Return to martial arts practice. Go again. Final fight of the contract. Please God!' he said in a social media post. 'My faith is unconditional and I am thankful I get to prove it! My lifestyle changes are permanent and not just until. I am thankful I get to prove it.'

'I am in Sin Citu and remain completely devoid of all sin. I will not open that door nor crack its seal! I am already back to collecting wins! In Jesus name I pray! Church was intense today, my heart is heavy but through Christ my mind is STRONG! I am so grateful to see my family fall more in love with God each day!'

'I am a child of God. I am a friend of God. God makes a way for me where there seems to be no way. I am not a victim of my circumstances, I overcome them. God is at work in me to will and to work his good pleasure! My youth is being renewed like the eagles! In Jesus I am thoroughly loved, cherished, adored. I walk in divine health. I live under supernatural protection. All things work out for my good! All things are possible for me because I am a believer! I trust in You Lord! Show me Your way. Thank You God.'
