Maudsley: 'I did not see victims as human'

Robert Maudsley, the 73-year-old Liverpool-born quadruple killer known as 'Britain's most dangerous prisoner', has given his first interview in 50 years. Speaking to the Mirror, he said he could kill again if released, particularly if he encountered someone who had sexually abused him. He believes he should remain in prison for life.

52 years behind bars

Maudsley has spent 52 years in prison and around 17,500 consecutive days in solitary confinement or segregation. He is believed to have spent the vast majority of his time behind bars alone. He says therapy could potentially help him overcome his feelings, but he describes his whole-life sentence as justified.

Maudsley says he suffered abuse as a child, claiming his father sexually abused him and locked him in a cupboard under the stairs. He says he later developed thoughts of killing both his parents and harming himself.

Extreme prison conditions

His prison conditions have included extreme security measures. At Wakefield, he spent time in a cell fitted with a Perspex barrier and had to put his feet through a gap beneath his cell door so officers could cut his toenails.

Maudsley has formed a relationship with Loveinia MacKenney after almost five years of letters and phone calls. He says he has not seen her since February 2025 and is fighting to have her prison visits approved.

Unapologetic reflections

Maudsley remains unapologetic about killing his victims and said he did not see them as human. Reflecting on his crimes, he compared himself to the people he killed, saying: "The people I killed did not see their victims as human, in a sense I was a piece of meat. I treated them the same, and got my revenge that way."

Despite his notorious past, Maudsley says he wants to remain behind bars. He now finds happiness in small things such as classical music, television, sunlight and feeling the wind through his cell window.
