A man who suffered a serious head injury after a punching bag machine landed on him has died. The unnamed victim, in his 50s, was taken to hospital following the incident in front of a row of shops on Berkley Street, Toxteth, just before 7pm on October 29.
Merseyside Police said officers were initially called to the scene following reports of a disturbance. During the incident, it was reported that a punch bag machine was pushed over and landed on a male bystander. In an update today, Monday, Merseyside Police confirmed the man had died as a result of his injuries.
Suspect charged
The force confirmed a suspect was arrested on Sunday. Moroccan national Iliasse Alhag, 22, of Percy Street in Toxteth, was charged with affray, assault and wounding with intent. He appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court today, Monday. The Crown Prosecution Service is now reviewing the initial charges, police said today.
Detective Chief Inspector Alyson Keenan said: "We are continuing our enquiries into this incident and urge anyone who was in the area of Berkley Street at the time, or who has information which could assist the investigation, to please get in touch."
Scene and appeal
A police cordon was in place around Bon Cafe and Katma Barber, where the disturbance is alleged to have begun. Pictures taken by the ECHO the following morning showed forensic officers inside the barber shop. A white evidence tent was also seen in front of the cafe.
An eyewitness who spoke to the ECHO at the scene said he knew the victim and he had no involvement in the initial disturbance. Police have described him as a bystander.
