A quiet street in the Hunter Valley community of Kearsley has become the centre of a murder investigation after police discovered a woman's body inside a residential property on Saturday.
Emergency services were called to the home on Great North Road around 1:30pm following concerns for the welfare of the occupant. Upon arrival, officers made the grim discovery of a deceased woman, whose identity is yet to be formally confirmed.
Swift Arrest Leads to Murder Charge
NSW Police launched an immediate investigation, resulting in the arrest of a 39-year-old man at the scene. After extensive questioning at Cessnock Police Station, detectives formally charged the man with murder.
"This is a tragic incident that has shocked the local community," a police spokesperson stated. "Our thoughts are with the woman's family and loved ones during this difficult time."
Court Appearance and Ongoing Investigation
The accused faced Cessnock Local Court on Sunday, where he was formally refused bail. The matter has been adjourned to allow police to continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman's death.
Forensic specialists remained at the crime scene throughout the weekend, conducting a thorough examination of the property. Police have established a crime scene that encompasses both the interior of the home and surrounding areas.
Community in Shock
Neighbours expressed their shock and disbelief at the incident in what is typically considered a peaceful residential area. Local residents described the street as usually quiet, making the violent nature of the incident particularly disturbing.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident or who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the Great North Road area to come forward as their investigation continues.
