A 36-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a grandfather who was punched outside a village pub in Leicestershire.

Tragic Death Outside The Crown Inn

David Darke, aged 66, known affectionately as Dave, passed away in hospital on Saturday, December 27. The fatal incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, December 21, outside The Crown Inn in Appleby Magna. Mr Darke sustained a serious head injury during the alleged assault.

Suspect Appears in Court

Leicestershire Police confirmed that Nathan Gothard, of Church Street in Appleby Magna, has been charged with murder. The 36-year-old appeared at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Monday, December 29. The case marks a devastating turn of events in the small village community.

A Family's Heartbreaking Tribute

In an emotional statement, Mr Darke's grieving family paid tribute to a beloved figure. They described him as a deeply loved father to three daughters and a proud grandfather to three boys.

"He was a much-loved brother and a dear friend. Dave will live on forever in our hearts, minds and souls," the family said.

They remembered him as a strong, active, intelligent, and kind person who was "a friend to all." A devoted family man, David Darke had a deep passion for life, the outdoors, nature, and walking.

"His life was tragically cut short and he’s now reunited with his loving, caring parents," the statement continued. "He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him."

The investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the altercation outside the village pub remains ongoing as the judicial process begins.
