A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire at a former nightclub on King Street in Wigan. The blaze broke out at around 3.10am on Monday morning (August 24) in the building that previously housed Jumpin' Jak's nightclub, which also suffered a large fire in November last year. The arrested man has been taken into custody.
Emergency services remain at scene
Emergency services are still at the scene this morning with a police cordon in place. King Street is closed from Rodney Street to College Avenue, causing disruption to bus services.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Emergency services attended an address on King Street in Wigan following reports of a fire at around 3:10am this morning (24/08/26). One man, aged 31, has been arrested on suspicion of arson and remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing at this time."
Fire crews extinguish blaze
A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Just after 3am this morning (Monday 24 August), three fire engines from Bolton Central and Atherton fire station were called to reports of a building fire involving an old nightclub on King Street, Wigan. Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used breaking in gear, two hose reel jets, and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire. Firefighters have been in attendance for around five hours. Crews remain at the scene, checking for hot spots."
