London Disorder After France Beat Morocco Injures Officer

A police officer sustained injuries and multiple arrests were made following violent disorder in London on Thursday night after France defeated Morocco 2-0 in a World Cup quarter-final held in Boston, United States. Clashes erupted between police and fans on Edgware Road, where social media footage captured flares being set off and missiles thrown at officers in the middle of a London street.

Arrests and Injuries

The Metropolitan Police reported that four individuals were arrested for violent disorder. One officer was taken to hospital with a head injury after being struck by a glass bottle. The force stated: 'Officers were initially called after a group of people congregated in the road and blocked traffic. The incident then escalated with the group throwing bottles and setting off fireworks. As a result, further officers were deployed to the area.'

Police added that no other injuries were reported. Officers remained on scene until the group dispersed and the road reopened around 1am. The Met Police emphasised: 'We will not tolerate such disorder on our streets, or attacks on our officers … we will be reviewing CCTV and video footage circulating on social media to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice.'

Broader Context of Football-Related Incidents

The UK Football Policing Unit disclosed that 223 incidents related to the England-Mexico match earlier in the week had been recorded across England and Wales. These included six hate crime incidents, 32 instances of domestic abuse, and 42 arrests linked to England's victory, during which pubs were permitted to serve alcohol until 5am.

Tragedy in France

In France, emergency services reported that a 17-year-old girl died after falling from a truck while celebrating France's win over Morocco. She 'fell and was run over' by the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene in Aulnoye-Aymeries, near Maubeuge in northern France. The truck driver has been detained, and another teenager who witnessed the fall was hospitalised in shock. Celebrations erupted across France, with hundreds dancing in Paris streets under the watch of thousands of police officers.
