Michael Thompson has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 33 years for the rape and murder of his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson, followed by an elaborate attempt to stage her death as a suicide. The 56-year-old former amateur boxer was convicted on July 14, 2026, after a six-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court.
Brutal Attack and Deception
In the early hours of August 9 last year, Thompson raped and suffocated Kimberley in her bedroom at their home on Pinewood Road, Northampton. The couple had been separated for two years and were finalising their divorce. Kimberley, a civil servant and award-winning basketball coach, had started a new relationship and was planning to move out. She had requested approximately £65,000 as part of the divorce settlement.
After killing her, Thompson staged the bedroom to suggest Kimberley had taken her own life by overdosing on pills and alcohol. He called emergency services at 5:30am, feigning distress and performing CPR while wailing. Prosecutor Miranda Moore KC stated that Thompson had 'set a scene' by sending a text from Kimberley's phone to himself implying consensual sex, moving empty bottles of gin, vodka, and painkiller packets into her room, and placing a photograph of the couple together along with a picture of Kimberley's sister, who had died by suicide.
Social Media Manipulation
Thompson also pretended to be Kimberley on social media, changing her Facebook relationship status to 'got married' and posting a status about "drinking to much !" — a spelling error her family noted she would never make. Kimberley's family and friends insisted she was cheerful and making plans, including arranging flights to visit her daughter in the US, and would not have taken her own life.
Domestic Abuse History
The court heard that Thompson had subjected Kimberley to years of domestic abuse and had been spying on her, tracking her movements and reading her messages. A post-mortem examination found no alcohol and only low levels of caffeine, paracetamol, and codeine, with a pathologist concluding she died from external airway obstruction — smothering.
No Remorse
Judge Nirmal Shant KC noted Thompson showed no remorse, shaking his head and making noises of dissent during the trial, and refusing to attend the sentencing hearing. The judge said: "You have shown no remorse. Throughout the course of the trial you sat in the dock shaking your head and making audible noises of dissent. And in the ultimate act of cowardice and contempt, you have refused to come into court to hear from the family of the grief you have caused."
Victim Impact Statement
Kimberley's daughter, Athena, appeared via video-link from the US and told the court: "How could you do such an evil, selfish, malicious thing? How could you murder the mother of your own children? ... No amount of years rotting in prison will ever amount to what you deserve, because you deserve no life. You are a pathetic, unloved man. The day you killed my mother, you killed me too."
Prior Suspicion
During the trial, jurors were not told about the death of Thompson's previous partner, Rhonda Anderson, who was found dead in her bath in July 2000. An inquest ruled her death accidental due to electrocution. However, after Kimberley's murder, police launched a fresh murder investigation but concluded there was insufficient evidence to take further action against Thompson.
Police Statement
Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison of Northamptonshire Police said: "Early in our investigation into Kim's death we were told of the death of Michael Thompson's former partner Rhonda Anderson, 29, who died in July 2000. ... This work has now concluded, and it has been determined there is insufficient evidence to take the investigation further, with no further action being taken against Michael Thompson."
