Former Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe has pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend, marking a significant fall from grace for a player once tipped as the club's next big star. The 30-year-old was sentenced at Croydon Magistrates' Court on Friday, September 4, after admitting assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).
From Liverpool prospect to court sentencing
Ibe broke into Liverpool's first-team in 2014, looking set to become the club's next major talent. He made his professional debut for Wycombe Wanderers at just 15 before joining Liverpool in 2012. After progressing through the youth system, he made 58 appearances under Brendan Rodgers and Jürgen Klopp.
At one point, Ibe was considered the natural successor to Raheem Sterling, who left Liverpool for Manchester City in 2015 for a fee over £40m. Despite this promise, Liverpool sold Ibe to Bournemouth in 2016 for £15m. After struggling for game time, the south coast club released him in 2020. He subsequently played in Turkey and the lower leagues of English football before joining Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Sofia.
Assault details and court proceedings
The assault occurred in December last year when Ibe pulled a braid out of ex-girlfriend Amie Mayson's hair during an argument, leaving her with a bald patch. The incident unfolded after Ms Mayson asked Ibe about money she claimed he owed her, Croydon Magistrates' Court heard.
Prosecutor Aya Alshekhili said that when Ms Mayson asked for the money, Ibe told her: “No, I’m going to be a pr***.” The court heard that when Ms Mayson called Ibe a "druggy", he took hold of her arm forcefully and then grabbed her hair.
Previous convictions and sentence
While still at Bournemouth in 2020, Ibe pleaded guilty to careless driving and was found guilty of failing to stop after an accident when he lost control of his Bentley Bentayga that struck a parked Mercedes before crashing into the front of a cafe in Bromley. He received a 16-month driving ban, a 12-month community order, and had to pay a fine of £7,500 plus compensation.
In January 2021, Ibe spoke out about his mental health struggles, sharing a post on Instagram where he said: "I want to apologise to all of my fans around the world. I find myself in a dark place, due to suffering with depression. It's no scheme for the media or to have my name in your mouths, I just find things truly hard."
In court, Ibe said: "I made a serious mistake." He added: "I understand it is wrong. I am genuinely remorseful. I’ve had to look at myself in the mirror. I cannot change what I did but will take responsibility for what I do next."
Magistrate Brij Kalia sentenced Ibe to a 12-month community order, 80 hours of unpaid work, and 27 days of rehabilitation activity. Ibe was also handed a £764 fine, including £114 of surcharge and £650 in court costs.
